Smaug Assembly WIP 2

Here's some more pictures of Smaug showing his size... this model is huge.  I'm still working on getting the wings to fit on perfectly and add magnets so I can paint it easily.  Once I'm done them then I can add the last spikes and start painting.

In other news, I ordered a set of Badger Minitaire Paints and they arrived today.  I hope to get them out shortly and do a review of them as I'm painting Smaug.

Smaug assembly video

Here's a video showing some of the steps and tips for assembling the Smaug model.  Its basically a large forgeworld dragon with all the problems associated with that.  The fit is generally good, but because I need to leave the wings off for painting I needed to spend some extra time on him.

This guy is huge... he doesn't fit on any of my shelves properly, so either the base is going to stick out, or I'm going to have to find somewhere else for him.  Looking forward to painting him, but am not sure how much time I'll have over the holidays (I'm also working on finishing my basement).

Let me know if you have any questions...

How to paint Sanguinary Guard

Captain Karlaen WIP

So I caved to the pressure and picked up a Deathstorm box.  I "needed" the captain special character, and am interested in trying out some Tyranids.  Anyway, I'm doing up Captain Karlaen in the standard colours and will do a video of him when I'm done. It might double as a space hulk how-to since he's decorated to the same sort of level.

Anyway, he's coming along nicely, and I'm past all of the hard bits... I did most of the painting before assembling him, and the pics below show how I've got him currently.

Captain Karlaen Showcase

I finished this guy up last night and am working on the tutorial now... but here's a nice showcase of him.  I painted him mostly unassembled and as I finished different steps did partial assemblies.  This helped get in some of the hard to get areas.  His details are very similar to the space hulk terminators, so I suspect that the same is true for the new blood angels terminators (haven't seen them in person yet).

Merry Christmas everybody.  Here's a look at the current state of my painted collection.  I'm only showing what I have painted, but its a lot of stuff.  Hope you enjoy it.

Flash Gitz WIP

Here's some work in progress shots of the stuff on my painting bench.  I'm finally working on the new Flash Gitz, and while I'm at it have slipped in a few runtheards for good measure.  The flash gitz were started with a silver spray followed with a dark wash, and I'll build all the colours up from there.

These guys were built back when the codex came out, but other things jumped the queue, so I'm only painting them now.  I played a game with my brother over Christmas, so that inspired me to work on my orks again.

Smaug painting WIP 1

I finally carved out some time to start painting Smaug.  I've been working on finishing part of my basement, so my airbrush setup has been moved a bit.  Anyway, I have started some of the base colours on this guy and will be doing the first levels of highlight when I get a chance next.  I'm using badger miniatare paints, and so far they seem to be quite nice.

Captain Karlaen Painting video and guide

Here's the finished tutorial of Captain Karlaen from Deathstorm.  I find these single characters a lot of fun to paint, but when it comes to full units all those extra details makes it pretty tedious.

Anyway, as usual, a painting guide is below, which is basically what I followed in the video.  This is also similar to the White Dwarf paint splatter article, except I like to do all the base colours at once (rather than start and finish each colour).  This helps reduce touch ups on finished areas and prevents missing areas that need to be totally redone.

Skaven Grey Seer WIP

Followers of this blog may remember that I made a quick tutorial on how to make the Grey Seer from the Screaming bell a single character.  This is good if you make the kit into a plague furnace and have him left over.  Well, with the new Skaven coming out I decided to give him a quick paint job.  Pretty simple scheme and I'm surprised at how fast I was able to lay down the base colours.  Much more fun than all the complicated schemes for 40k (especially my flash gitz).

Skaven Grey Seer Tutorial and Guide

Here's the finished Grey Seer as well as the tutorial video and painting guide.  To save time I didn't video the base colours or wash step, but they's nothing too interesting happening there.  I used the same wash for the while model (Reikland Fleshshade).  This was a lot of fun because he was done so fast.

Skaven Vermin Lord (Forgeworld version) WIP

I'm enjoying the Minitaire paints.  In fact, I took a break from Smaug to paint up the Forgeworld (Warhammer Forge) Skaven Exhaulted Vermin Lord that's been sitting on my to-do shelf for quite a while.  This is why I haven't picked up the new plastic kit, because I need to clear out some of my backlog before I buy more stuff to paint.

I didn't take any video of this, so maybe it'll be a written tutorial if there is enough interest.  It took about an hour and a half to get to this point, and now all I have to do is some of the detail painting.  Time wise I'm really happy with how this has turned out, so its a nice compromise in getting stuff done.  Next time I'll probably just run the camera and post the video.

Smaug airbrushing WIP 2

I was able to get a bit more airbrushing done on Smaug.  I'm trying to build up the colours and highlights, but with such a huge model it takes a while.  The wings especially seem to suck in the paint with little to show for it.

Its tricky trying to get the right tones of red without going orange and pink.  I gave the magenta ghost tint a shot, but it came out too pink, so went over that again with one of the mid tone reds.

Smaug Airbrushing WIP 3

I was able to get a bit more progress on Smaug last night.  I added some lighter tones to the wings and re-shaded some of the scales.  For the scales I'm airbrushing them black and then will edge highlight them by hand.

Any thoughts on the colour for the wings?  Does it need to be more tan colour (less orange), or is this looking ok?  Its really hard to get good source images because anything from the movie has very harsh lighting.

Skaven Vermin Lord WIP 2

Here's the Warhammer Forge Vermin lord with some final touches on my painting table.  I'm trying to keep the final steps to a minimum, but its hard stopping when I know there are more details I can add.  The point is to speed up the workflow, so I've got to show some restraint.  Anyway, I'm happy with the results and will post some finished pics shortly.

After airbrushing the steps were limited to:
black wash on horns
Metallic bits on weapon
leather base and layers
green wash on warpstone followed by white edge highlights
teeth
red eye

Flash Gitz Showcase

Well, I've finally got these guys done.  I'd say that with all the extra colours these guys are similar to bikes or mounted figures in terms of workload.  I'm happy they are done, and have wanted to have impressive models like these ever since the Freebooterz book came out out oh so long ago.

I'll be putting together a video tutorial as usual, but here's a showcase in the meantime.  Baddruck and his ammo runtz were painted up a while ago, but in a similar enough paint scheme.

Flash Gitz Tutorial

Here's the promised Flash Gitz video tutorial.  These guys took forever, mostly because of all the different colours.  I'm happy to have them finished for my collection, and would love to give them a shot on the table top.

A lot of the painting tutorial uses the same colours as the GW Ork painting guide, with the main exception being how I started out.  I sprayed these guys black first, then silver and gave them a black wash.  This meant that I wasn't fiddling around with too many metallics later on, which I find takes a lot of time.  As usual, if you have questions, please leave them in the comments below.

Harlequin Unboxing and Assembly

I caved and picked up a troupe box yesterday... I had wanted to wait until the full release came out before picking anything up, but these things are trickling out so slowly that I pulled the trigger.  I'd like to put together a small band to complement my Dark Eldar, so I'll probably pick up a transport and character to go with these guys.  I'm also considering the idea of converting wyches into Harlequins... might be a decent conversion project.  The basic idea would be to put masks on heads and use Harlequin arms.

Also, a size comparison below the video...
